About
Angus Buchanan is an emerging visual artist based in Wadjuck Noongar Country, Perth, Western Australia.
Angus’ practice is shaped by a sustained interest in family memory, still life, material culture and the emotional presence of everyday objects. Working through drawing, painting and reflective studio processes, Angus looks closely at the things that remain around us: inherited objects, domestic forms, small arrangements, personal traces and the quiet details of ordinary life.
His work considers how objects can carry attachment, loss, care and continuity across generations. A vessel, cloth, photograph, tool or familiar household item may become a starting point for thinking about family, absence and the passage of time. Through still life, Angus explores the way personal histories are held in material things and how the overlooked object can become a quiet witness to memory and connection.
Alongside his art practice, Angus has had a long academic and professional career in occupational therapy, disability studies, inclusion and human services. This background informs his interest in people, place, belonging and the meanings attached to lived experience. He is also a husband, father, grandfather, gardener, labrador owner and academic author. These parts of his life sit quietly within his studio practice, where personal memory and everyday material life are brought into close conversation.

Artist Statement
My practice begins with the ordinary object. I am drawn to the way domestic things can hold memory, even when they seem modest or familiar. A vessel, a cloth, a photograph, a tool or a small arrangement of objects can become a way of thinking about family, absence, care and time. Through still life, I try to make space for the emotional charge of things that might otherwise be overlooked.
This work is personal, but it also connects with broader questions about belonging, human connection and the stories that remain embedded in material life. I am interested in how objects can speak quietly about grief, love, continuity and the traces of those who have shaped us. In the studio, I work slowly and attentively, allowing observation to become a form of reflection.
